A hard drive formatted for use in a Mac computer has either a HFS or HFS+ file system. For this reason, a Mac-formatted hard drive is not directly compatible nor readable by a Windows computer. The HFS and HFS+ file systems are not readable by Windows. Using a third-party application it may be. Read Mac Formatted Drives with Windows This is because Mac uses the HFS+ format natively, whereas Windows uses ExFAT or NTFS. One simple way to make the drive readable on both platforms is to format it to ExFAT, which both operating systems can understand.
Hello,
Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am glad to assist you on this.
Unfortunately there is no such application in Windows to read MAC files on an external hard drive. However, I would suggest you to find any third party application using your favorite search engine and see if it helps.

Thanks for the prompt reply but I can understand your reason for providing such a 'safe' reply. I continued to search and I'vre run into a program called Paragon HFS.. still haven't tried it yet.. will post results as soon as I can.

So the Paragon software was a waste of $20 bucks and it resolved nothing. RossmanRepairGroup.com repaired my MacBook Pro which I am using right now.. the ? remains.. How can i transfer my files from mac to PC? I borrowed my girlfriend's PC and I searched the net and I was able to download a program called Fat32Formatter.. very simple file you just unzip and run. it doesn't even install anything on your computer. The format of the external hard drive took 30 hours.. BUT.. I now have 1 TB of Fat32!! So it was well worth the wait.. just leave it running until it is done. I have transferred all my music, pics, etc to my external drive from the mac and i was able to access and USE those same files on my girl's PC (which is Windows 8 btw) ... In summary: I was never ab;e to get the PC to read from a Mac format HFS drive. I needed both the Mac and a PC to get the job done. Just get a hard drive formatted as FAT32 and you can plug it into a Mac, get your files and plug it into a PC.. and you're done. The tough step here is finding the Fat32Formatter that will format the whole drive THIS IS WHAT I USED: http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/ NOTE: This program only works on Windows/PC Good Luck everyone! #F*CKAPPLE

I don't get it. If you format the external drive, wouldn't you lose all the files in it?
Anyway, for anyone who is having the same issue, I was searching for this same issue (reading files in a Mac formatted drive from Windows 10) and found HFSExplorer.
Have not tried it yet, but description says it can read only (the files in you Mac formatted external hard drive).
This way, although not being able to edit or write, you can at least copy the files to Windows.

Thank you so much. I had the same issue, and with Time Machine backup files. HFSExplorer did the trick. Then I could extract all my Iphoto pictures and Itunes music to my new Windows computer without a problem.

Mac Disk Reader For Windows
Rakesh Shewale writes with a common question about formatting compatibility:
I bought a new external HDD for my mac about a month ago and formatted it to Mac OS X Extended Journaled. Now it has my all data. But the problem is I can’t access this HDD from my PC which has Windows and Linux.
The trouble is that the drive is already formatted—this limits options, but it’s neither expensive nor impossible to proceed. Paragon is a long-time developer of cross-platform Mac/Windows disk mounting software, and its HFS+ for Windows 10 works on Windows releases all the way back to XP and Windows Server 2003 all the way through the present Windows 10 release. It’s $20, but also has a 10-day trial. HFSExplorer for Windows is free and updated for Windows 10, but requires the installation of the Java 5 or later runtime environment (JRE), which can introduce security issues unless you configure it carefully.
For Ubuntu users and those with Unix or Linux distributions that can support hfsprogs, you can turn to a detailed thread at Ask Ubuntu for advice on mounting in read-only mode or, with some additional effort, as read/write.
If you’re starting from scratch, you can initialize a drive as MS-DOS (FAT)—better known as FAT32—which is readable up to Windows XP with the Master Boot Record scheme. Or, as long as you’re using Windows 7 or later with a 64-bit PC, you can pick both ExFAT, a replacement that handles much larger files (4GB and larger), and GUID Partition Map. A drive formatted in this fashion can be swapped between a Mac and Windows PC.
However, you might choose instead a format you can use easily with OS X, Windows, and Linux. Topher Kessler wrote in Macworld in December 2014 about using FUSE to extend which formats a Mac can read and write, including the common Linux format ext3.

While ext3 can’t be mounted directly in Windows, you can turn to the free Ext2Fsd Project, which isn’t yet compatible with Windows 10 at this writing. It’s also an unsupported project—there’s no one to complain to about crashes or data failures. For supported software, Paragon’s ExtFS for Windows Professional ($20, works up through Windows 10) will do the trick.
